Utah Goes 0-2 In Arizona, Dropping Their Second Road Contest To ASU

TEMPE, AZ – Utah basketball was on the road this weekend in Arizona and went 0-2, dropping their second contest of the weekend against ASU Saturday evening.

The Utes and Sun Devils spent what felt like much of the game tied, but Arizona State eventually pulled away, 67-59.

In the process of trying to walk out of Tempe victorious, Utah lost Rollie Worster in the second half further limiting their ability to shoot the ball. The Utes finished the night shooting 38% from the field and 24% from the three while also racking up 17 turnovers compared to the Sun Devil’s five that led to 20 additional ASU points.

Utah, Arizona State First Half

Branden Carlson hit a three to put the Utes on the board for the first time at the 17-minute mark after Arizona State had already built up a 7-0 lead. BC knocked down a jumper two minutes later to make it a 7-5 game in favor of ASU. The Sun Devils answered just before the first break to extend their lead, 9-5.

Ben Carlson was next to get on the board for the Utes with the layup to make it a two-point game with just under 13 minutes to play, 9-7. In this time ASU was just 1-11 shooting from the field. The Sun Devils broke their scoring drought near the 10-minute mark giving them some room to breathe, 13-9.

Rollie Worster hit a deep three and followed it up with a layup to put Utah within one point of ASU, 15-14. The Utes and Sun Devils were tied at the six-minute mark until BC hit the board to give them their first lead of the day before later extending it, 21-17. By the 3:34 mark, the Utes were up 23-19 on Arizona State.

Lazar Stefanovic hit a three with under three to play in the half lifting the Utes further, 26-19, but Arizona State answered quickly to make it a 26-21 game. A foul with six seconds left put ASU within one to close out the half, 26-25.

Utes, Sun Devils Second Half

Utah and ASU kept tying up the game in the first five minutes out of the half sitting at 35-35 by the first break. Unfortunately, through that time the Utes would suffer another injury they don’t have the bodies to cover for in Rollie Worster.

Stefanovic hit a three after Arizona State responded with a jumper out of the break giving the Utes a one-point lead, 38-37. Anthony gives Utah a little more room with his own jumper, 40-37 at about the 14-minute mark.

Wilguens Jr. Exacte hit a big time three to give the Utes more room, 43-39 with over 10 minutes left in the half. ASU wasted little time to make it a two-point game again, 43-41. By the eight-minute mark Utah and ASU were tied again at 45.

Anthony hits one off the board out of the break and earns a trip to the line giving the Utes a 50-47 advantage over the Sun Devils. ASU quickly responded to cut the lead back down to one, 50-49 with six minutes on the clock. With under five minutes left to play Utah and Arizona State were tied again at 53.
