BYU Football Announces Captains For 2025 Season

PROVO, Utah – BYU football named five players as captains for the 2025 season.
The leadership council was voted on by the players last week, after the conclusion of fall camp.

“I’m confident in this leadership team our players have selected,” said BYU football head coach Kalani Sitake. “We have a lot of good leaders on our team who will provide both leadership and support throughout our program to make our team better. We are excited for the season.”
2025 BYU Football Captains
BYU’s five captains entering the 2025 season include:
- LJ Martin, RB
- Chase Roberts, WR
- Keanu Tanuvasa, DT
- Tanner Wall, SAF
- Jack Kelly, LB
Chase Roberts is a repeat captain. It’s the second consecutive season the senior wide receiver has earned a captain nod from his teammates.
Everyone else is a first-time captain for BYU football.
Roberts is joined on offense in the captain spot by running back LJ Martin.
The soft-spoken ball carrier has found his voice this offseason and is expected to be a leader on and off the field for the Cougars this season. He’s led BYU in rushing yards the past two seasons.
Tanner Wall began his BYU football career as a walk-on wide receiver out of Virginia and has risen through the ranks as one of the top players on the defense. The senior free safety was BYU’s first Academic All-American in 14 years.
Jack Kelly led BYU in sacks last season with five. He’s expected to be one of the star players on a BYU defense that was No. 1 in the Big 12 last year.
Then, Utah transfer defensive tackle Keanu Tanuvasa slides in as a captain as well.
Tanuvasa has taken on the leadership role left behind by former First Team All-Big 12 defensive end Tyler Batty. The former Utah standout is one of the top players in the program, and coaches believe he could be one of the top defensive tackles in the country this season.

Along with the captains, BYU also named the co-captains for the 2025 season. A total of 12 players earned that distinction, which includes starting quarterback Bear Bachmeier.
