BYU Basketball Hosts Mid-Major Rookie Of The Year Transfer

PROVO, Utah – BYU basketball remains busy with activity in the transfer portal.
On Monday, the Cougars hosted UMass Lowell transfer guard Martin Somerville.

Rookie of the Year in the America East Conference
During his freshman season, the 6-foot-3, 184-pound guard was the America East Conference’s “Rookie of the Year.”
Somerville averaged 13.6 points, 3.7 assists, and 2.9 rebounds in his one season with the River Hawks.
He set the America East Conference record for most “Rookie of the Week” honors in a season, earning the weekly recognition 11 times.
Somerville was a fixture in the starting lineup from February 6 to the end of the season. He set a UMass Lowell Division I record for most assists in a game with 13 against UMBC on February 20.
Somerville also made at least four 3-pointers in six games, including a breakout performance on the road against Saint Louis, in which he hit six 3s off the bench.
Somerville is rated as the 317th overall transfer portal prospect in the 2025 cycle by 247Sports.
Before one season at UMass Lowell, Somerville played at Overtime Elite for a year. BYU basketball assistant Tim Fanning was a head coach in the Overtime Elite league during Somerville’s season with OTE.
Florida State is also expected to get a visit from Martin Somerville
Along with BYU, Somerville will reportedly visit Florida State on April 15.

BYU basketball has landed two transfers during the 2025 cycle from Baylor’s Robert Wright and Dominique Diomande from Washington.
