PROVO, Utah – BYU basketball pulled off a historic win over the Kansas Jayhawks.
No, the win wasn’t unexpected. Unranked BYU was the favorite over a reeling Kansas squad, ranked No. 23 in the most recent AP Top 25 poll.
BYU coach Kevin Young after the win over Kansas:
“Obviously a great win. We’ve been waiting for a win against a really storied program and a team that’s good.” pic.twitter.com/wTMFHdDyf3

But to hammer Kansas by 34 points. That’s the type of performance that very few have pulled off against a blue blood powerhouse like Kansas.
BYU basketball makes history in win over Kansas
BYU’s 34-point victory over Kansas was the Jayhawks’ third-largest loss in KU’s history. They have been playing basketball since 1898.
It’s a program where the game of basketball was created under former Kansas head coach James Naismith.
BYU’s blowout victory that featured 14 made 3-pointers by the Cougars resulted in the largest loss in the Bill Self era of Kansas basketball.
Self is in his 22nd season and has won two National Championships during his time as the Kansas head coach.
The win was BYU’s largest margin of victory in Big 12 Conference play since joining the league in 2023.
Before Tuesday night, Kansas had never lost a game by more than 30 points in the AP poll era. That dates back to 1948.
BYU’s 91-57 win was the largest margin of victory over a ranked team in program history. It was also the first time in program history that BYU defeated an opponent that was ranked No. 23 in the AP Top 25 poll.
Complete effort in the 91-57 win
BYU finished the game, knocking down 14 3-pointers on 36 attempts. They shot 51% from the field, 38.9% from 3-point range, and hit 75% of their free throw attempts.
BYU had five players score in double-figures, led by Richie Saunders, who scored 22 points. Trevin Knell scored 15, Mawot Mag dropped 13, and Keba Keita and Dallin Hall each added another 10 points.
BYU improves to 18-8 overall and 9-6 in Big 12 play. The win gives BYU sole possession of fifth place in the Big 12 standings.
After the historic defeat, Kansas drops to 17-9 overall and 8-7 in the Big 12.
