(Ben B. Braun, Deseret News)

PROVO, Utah – We’ve reached a new era for BYU football and the transfer portal. BYU is gearing up for its first season in the Big 12 Conference beginning on July 1, 2023.

A big piece to constructing rosters in the future will be through the transfer portal. Beginning on December 5 and running through January 18, 2023, is a transfer portal window for fall student-athletes. The transfer portal window is new on the college football calendar. It was created to stop players from entering the portal anytime during the year.

KSL Sports will keep a live BYU football tracker for the 2023 cycle throughout the next six weeks, with an analysis of each move.

Analysis of the BYU players that have entered the portal

Staying up-to-date with the latest transfer portal movement from the BYU football program.

Isaiah Perez | DL

2022 Stats: Redshirt season

New school: TBD

Years remaining: Four

Gabe Jeudy-Lally | CB

2022 Stats: 10 starts, 46 tackles, 7 PBUs

New school: Tennessee

Years remaining: Two

Analysis: Surprising move for Jeudy-Lally as he appeared excited for BYU’s Big 12 future in 2023. Plus, his position coach, Jernaro Gilford was retained on Jay Hill’s staff. Jeudy-Lally is a Power Five talent or high-end Group of Five program.

Korbyn Green | CB

2022 stats: Appeared in three games; redshirt

New school: TBD

Years remaining: Four

Analysis: BYU signed a handful of freshmen cornerbacks in the 2022 recruiting cycle, Green arrived with the most polished skill set among those players. The Tulsa, Oklahoma native is a player that could contribute at the Power Five level.

Clark Barrington | OL

2022 stats: 13 starts at guard

New school: Baylor

Years remaining: One

Analysis: A former All-American offensive lineman, the 2022 season was always expected to be his final season in Provo. But many expected that he would move on to the NFL. Entering the transfer portal as a graduate transfer, Barrington will have a long list of options as he is a plug-and-play offensive lineman at the guard spot.

Talin Togiai | OL

2022 stats: Redshirt season as a true freshman

New school: TBD

Years remaining: Four

Analysis: Togiai was BYU’s first commitment after being invited to the Big 12 Conference. A native of Rigby, Idaho, Togiai redshirted during his one season with the BYU football program.

Nathaniel Gillis | CB

2022 stats: Redshirt season as a true freshman

New school: Northern Colorado

Years remaining: Four

Analysis: A multi-sport athlete from California, Gillis was part of BYU’s 2022 recruiting class. He redshirted in his one season at BYU.

Keenan Pili | LB

2022 stats: 12 starts, 62 tackles, 4 TFL, 1 sack, 1 forced fumble, 1 fumble recovery, 1 pass breakup

New school: Tennessee

Years remaining: One

Analysis: Productive starter with NFL potential. He has one year remaining in his collegiate career due to the COVID year. Pili signed with BYU in the class of 2016.

Logan Fano | EDGE

2022 stats: Redshirt

New school: University of Utah

Years remaining: Four

Analysis: Heralded four-star recruit Logan Fano announced on social media that he is entering the transfer portal. Fano suffered an ACL injury during week one of spring practices. If he had stayed healthy, he would have been a starter off the edge for BYU. A Power Five talent and will have a long list of suitors in the portal.

Tate Romney | LB

2022 stats: Three games played (redshirt)

New school: Arizona State

Years remaining: Four

Romney was viewed as a potentially significant contributor moving forward. Year one after serving a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints always take time to return back to form physically, so the fact that he was part of the travel roster on numerous occasions spoke to his potential.

A tackling machine in high school, Romney is the younger brother to former BYU QB Baylor Romney and WR Gunner Romney.

Dallin Holker | TE

2022 stats: 19 receptions, 235 yards, one touchdown

New school: Colorado State

Years remaining: Two

Analysis: The loss of Dallin Holker was a big one to BYU’s future at tight end. Holker has the potential to be a TE1 at the Power Five level.

Jacob Conover | QB

2022 stats: 0-for-1, 0 yards, three games played

New school: Arizona State

Years remaining: Two

Analysis: Once a heralded recruit who was in a three-man QB race with Jaren Hall and Baylor Romney. Conover has talent. But he is a complete unknown. BYU coaches never turned to him when Jaren Hall was dealing with injuries or if a game was out of reach. So who he is as a quarterback at the college level is still a mystery.

Campbell Barrington | OL

2022 stats: Eight games played, zero starts

New school: Baylor

Years remaining: Two

Analysis: Has the potential to be a star offensive lineman at the Group of Five level. He also could be a starter in the Power Five. Barrington is talented, as he earned Freshman All-American honors at the right tackle spot during his freshman season in 2021 after grey shirting. He just got beat out by a former five-star in Kingsley Suamataia. Barrington is a versatile offensive lineman who can play any of the five positions along the line.

Terence Fall | WR

2022 stats: 12 games played; one reception for 19 yards; one rush for 25 yards and a touchdown

New school: Northern Arizona (FCS)

Years remaining: Three

Analysis: Fall is still young in terms of football experience. He began playing in high school. A developmental player that primarily played on special teams at BYU.
