PROVO, Utah – BYU football tight end Dallin Holker is planning to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal.

KSL Sports confirmed with the tight end directly. After Tuesday’s practice, Holker was not at practice as players walked off the Student Athlete Building practice field.

He informed BYU head coach Kalani Sitake of his intentions to move on from the program on September 19, two days after BYU suffered a 21-point loss to the Oregon Ducks at Autzen Stadium.

“I prayed about it, and I felt like it was the right decision for my family and I. I feel I will be able to have a better opportunity to show what I can do somewhere else,” said Holker to KSL Sports via text.

Holker’s name won’t officially be in the transfer portal until December 5, at the earliest. That’s the start of the new 45-day transfer portal window the NCAA established for fall sports athletes to enter.

Holker will remain on scholarship at Brigham Young University through the semester until he enters the Transfer Portal.

A former star tight end at Lehi High School, Holker signed with BYU in the class of 2018. He had offers from Oregon State, Utah State, and Colorado State, among others.

Holker joined the BYU program in 2018 and showed immediate flashes of his high ceiling in fall camp under offensive coordinator Jeff Grimes. The 6-foot-5, 240-pound Holker was a co-starter with former Freshman All-American tight end Matt Bushman in week one of his true freshman season.

After his freshman campaign, Holker served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to Chile. He returned for the 2021 season as a sophomore, recording 14 receptions for 200 yards.

In 2022, Holker was BYU’s tight end No. 1 during spring, while Isaac Rex was out with an injury he suffered during the USC game. Through three games, Holker has hauled in nine catches for 86 yards and one touchdown in the season-opener against South Florida.

Without Holker, BYU will move forward with Isaac Rex and Masen Wake. Behind them is Ethan Erickson, who received high praise from offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick during fall camp. And then Carter Wheat, Lane Lunt, and Anthony Olsen.

With leaving the team now, Holker can count this year as a redshirt season. Student-athletes can play in up to four games, and still maintain a redshirt season.

NCAA transfer rules allow athletes to have one waiver for undergrad transfers. Whoever Holker transfers to in 2023, he will be eligible immediately for that team next season with two years of eligibility remaining.
