PROVO, Utah – The BYU football team has reached double digits in fall camp. BYU is now up to day 10.

It was another hot day as temperatures reached 94 degrees, but there were moments of cool down as a large cloud covered the final ten minutes of practice. Local media members gathered at the Student Athlete Building to watch the last 20 minutes of practice.

During the media observation window, there was some notable action.

Jacob Conover throws a nice touchdown pass to Brayden Cosper

One play in particular that stood out was from second-string quarterback Jacob Conover. Conover showed why he is head and shoulders above the rest of the quarterback room with a touchdown strike to wide receiver Brayden Cosper.

Conover also had a deep ball attempt in the endzone intended for Keanu Hill. Hill tried to catch the ball in traffic but couldn’t quite come up with the catch.

Wide Receiver notes

With proven players getting the opportunity to rest, Puka Nacua and Gunner Romney were off to the sideline during the media observation portion of practice. Their contribution on Tuesday was signaling signs to the offense during practice.

In replace of them, Brayden Cosper and Keanu Hill appeared to be the first team receivers, with Kody Epps being the third.

Quarterback keeper

Saw a quarterback keeper for Jaren Hall during practice. It’s hard to imagine BYU dialing up many quarterback keepers for their star signal-caller this season. But sometimes, his athleticism and instincts will call for an opportunity to scramble in games.

We also saw Jacob Conover with a QB keeper run for a touchdown. There was a flag on the play. I didn’t catch the penalty, but the practice concluded shortly after.

Micah Harper

During the first handful of days of camp, we didn’t see much from Micah Harper, who’s still working his way back from the ACL injury he suffered last season. However, he was a full-go today in practice. Harper was a starter at cornerback in eight games during his freshman season in 2020. In 2022, he appears set at safety. Harper is one of the hardest hitters on the team.

Sacks for BYU football

BYU football linebacker Keenan Pili and defensive lineman Lorenzo Fauatea each recorded sacks on Jaren Hall during practice. Neither was whistled dead, but if it were a live game situation where they could make contact with the QB, both would have been sacks.

The defensive line had a good day

BYU defensive coordinator Ilaisa Tuiaki when asked by KSL Sports about the standouts in camp along the defensive line, Tuiaki replied, “We’ve got a crew where not too many people are talking about specific guys. We’ve got guys that are quietly doing their jobs really, really, well, and it’s making us play better as a defense.”

Some specific guys that caught my attention included Tyler Batty, who had a tackle at the line of scrimmage against Chris Brooks that was whistled dead. In addition, Fisher Jackson showed his speed off the edge on a handoff play from Miles Davis.

Offensive line shakeup

We saw Joe Tukuafu at center with the first team offensive line. Connor Pay was with the second unit.

Take a break

One of this fall camp’s themes is ensuring BYU has its entire collection of personnel during the season. As a result, some players have taken days off.

On Tuesday, along with Romney and Nacua, players that appeared to get a break, at least during the media observation portion of practice, included tight end Dallin Holker, defensive linemen Earl Tuioti-Mariner, Atunaisa Mahe, Aisea Moa, quarterback Sol-Jay Maiava-Peters, and linebacker Isaiah Glasker.
