PROVO, Utah – Week two of BYU football fall camp opened on Monday.

After having Sunday off, the Cougars returned to the Student Athlete Building for another day of camp. Again, the media watched the final 20 minutes of practice.

Near the end of the practice is when the offense made the highlight of the day. BYU quarterback Jaren Hall threw a perfect spiral 50 yards downfield to redshirt freshmen Chase Roberts. Roberts, who is in contention as the third wide receiver after Puka Nacua and Gunner Romney, hauled in the pass in the back of the endzone for a touchdown.

BYU football fall camp observations from Day Four

Here are some additional quick hit notes and tidbits from day four’s media observation.

No changes to the roster

BYU’s media communications staff passed out rosters to the assembled media on Monday. There were no new changes to the 109-man roster. So that means players such as Chaz Ah You and punt returner Hobbs Nyberg were not on the list.

There were also no new updates on newcomers Lisala Tai and defensive back Mory Bamba.

NFL scout in attendance

One scout from the Pittsburgh Steelers organization was on the practice field today to watch BYU football fall camp day four. The Cougars have a handful of players that could be draftable players in the 2023 class.

7-on-7 Red Zone

Early in the media observation practice session, we witnessed 7-on-7 work in the red zone. The order of quarterbacks that trotted out were Jaren Hall, Jacob Conover, Cade Fennegan, then preferred walk-on Nick Billoups.

Hall had a touchdown strike to Ethan Erickson in the red zone work. Conover connected with Carter Wheat.

Two local receivers started at receiver

Gunner Romney was neither participating nor on the sidelines at practice on Monday. BYU offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick said that was to give guys rest. In replace of Romney, running with the first team offense at receiver was former Bingham High pass catcher Brayden Cosper.

Cosper, who switched from No. 85 to No. 20 because he felt 85 was cursed due to his injuries, is well-versed in Roderick’s playbook. Along with him at receiver was former Orem High star Puka Nacua.

Freshman receiver gets some run

Another in-state receiver saw some additional reps due to the absence of Romney was former Roy High star Parker Kingston. Kingston gained positive yardage on a jet sweep. A former track and field star, Kingston was once committed to Air Force to play quarterback for the Cadets before flipping his pledge to BYU.

Battle at safety

A big question coming into fall camp was who would start at the strong safety spot next to free safety Malik Moore? During the team portion of practice, we saw a lot of Ammon Hannemann, who seems to be a favorite to win that job.

Top four corners

The media had a chance to talk with Vanderbilt transfer Gabe Jeudy-Lally. Jeudy is an impressive interview, and he’s already impressing coaches based on the snaps he’s getting in practice.

Jeudy-Lally is already in the top four corners, which is no surprise, considering he was a former starter at Vandy. After four days of practice, the top four corners appear to be Kaleb Hayes and D’Angelo Mandell, with Gabe Jeudy-Lally and Jakob Robinson as the second unit.

Defense creating some pressure

BYU defensive linemen Fisher Jackson, Blake Mangelson, and linebacker Morgan Pyper all got into the offensive backfield against BYU’s second-team offense to create pressure on Jacob Conover.

Fennegan shows off his arm strength

Former Boise State transfer Cade Fennegan attempted a deep pass to walk-on wide receiver Talmage Gunther. It was a well-thrown ball, but Gunther couldn’t come up with it. Jackson Kaufusi, Zion Allen, and Preston Rex will each in pursuit.
