BYU, San Diego State Extend Men’s Basketball Series

SALT LAKE CITY – BYU Athletics announced that the Cougars have extended their men’s basketball series with the San Diego State Aztecs.
BYU shared details of the agreement on Wednesday, June 1.
The Cougars and Aztecs will play for an additional two season with game in 2022 and 2023.
BYU will first play SDSU at Viejas Arena on November 11. The Aztecs will come to Provo on a return trip to the Marriott Center during the 2023 season.
The Cougars and Aztecs have played each other 76 times in men’s basketball. BYU owns a 50-26 lead in the series.

Prior to the Cougars joining the West Coast Conference, BYU and SDSU faced each other as members of the Western Athletic and Mountain West conferences from 1978 until the Cougars left for the WCC in 2011.

BYU and San Diego State last met during the 2021-22 campaign. The Cougars hosted the Aztecs in November 2021 for 66-60 victory. BYU has captured win its last two meetings with SDSU. San Diego State’s last win over BYU came in November 2019.
Last season, the Cougars had a 24-11 record and finished in fifth place in the WCC. BYU earned an invitation to play in the NIT postseason tourney.
San Diego State posted a 23-9 record last season and placed third in the Mountain West regular s season standings. The Aztecs lost Creighton during the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Next season will be BYU’s final year as a member of the West Coast Conference. The Cougars are headed to the Big 12 for the 2023-24 season and beyond. BYU’s final year in the WCC will be head coach Mark Pope’s fourth season leading the Cougars’ men’s basketball program. Pope owns a 68-26 overall record, including 32-12 in conference play, during his first three seasons as BYU’s head coach.
