BYU’s Masen Wake Looks To Continue Hurdling While Expanding His Role

PROVO, Utah – BYU football fullback and tight end Masen Wake had very high praise for the coaching staff, his teammates, and the program as a whole.
Wake, known for getting around defenders by trucking through them or hurdling over them, told Cougar Sports Saturday that the hurdles are here to stay.
“It’s part of my game now, and that’s all the fans want.” Wake said. “I need to start trucking a few more guys, but I mean, every once in a while, it’s working. It’s fun to hear the stadium roar after.”

Wake had 148 receiving yards and a touchdown in the 2021 season. He averaged over 10.5 yards per reception.
Wake emphasized the importance of the culture that Coach Kalani Sitake has put in place. Despite growing up as a Boise State fan, Wake said he resonated with the atmosphere that Coach Kalani has set up.
“Coach Kalani is just, it’s amazing. Like every single kid feels like they belong, whether you’re a walk-on, scholarship, or an upperclassman.” Wake said. “You just feel like you have a chance and a shot to play. Just the loving atmosphere that coach Kalani harps on a lot. I love this place, it’s kind of hard to explain, but like, it’s totally different down here.”
Wake has expanded his role each year since joining the program in 2019. Despite coming off a foot injury, Wake wants to continue this trend.
“One of my goals this offseason is to shed a few pounds and drop the body fat percentage so I can run routes in the slot. Just being able to be there on the field at all times is a goal of mine.”
