PROVO, Utah – BYU basketball needs to retool its roster after having five players enter the Transfer Portal. Getting a portal addition from one of the greatest scorers in college basketball history would help the retooling efforts.

BYU will host Detroit guard Antoine Davis on an official visit.

Davis is not an ordinary Transfer Portal prospect. The 6-foot-1 guard is the 22nd all-time scorer in NCAA men’s basketball history.

In four seasons at Detroit Mercy, Davis racked up 2,734 points, which is good for 22nd all-time in men’s college basketball scoring leaders. Davis is two spots ahead of former BYU guard Tyler Haws, who scored 2,720 points in his four years with the Cougars.

Davis averaged 26.1 points as a freshman, 24.3 his sophomore year, 24.0 points during the COVID season of 2020-21, and 23.9 points this past year. Coached by his father, Mike Davis (former Indiana head coach), Davis is one of the top bucket getters in college basketball.

College basketball insider Jon Rothstein reports that Davis will visit Maryland, Kansas State, Georgetown, and BYU.

It’s a significant development for BYU to get a visit lined up with Davis as the Cougars are actively pursuing a portal guard to replace three-year starter Alex Barcello. But it’s also noteworthy that BYU got a visit lined up when you consider the schools Davis has been contacted by since entering the Transfer Portal last week.

College basketball bluebloods such as Kentucky and the defending national champion Kansas Jayhawks have reached out to Davis.

NIL opportunities could help BYU basketball

A big reason that Davis entered the Transfer Portal last week was due to potential Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) opportunities.

“If I wasn’t his coach, I would tell him to do exactly what he did,” Detroit Mercy head coach Mike Davis told The Detroit News after Antoine Davis entered the Portal. “You have a chance to make a half-million to a million dollars in NIL, and you put that money in the bank and you don’t spend it … let it sit for 10 years, that’s pretty impressive.”

BYU as an athletic department has emerged as a leader in the NIL space since the NCAA dropped legislation that prevented student-athletes from profiting off their name, image, and likeness last July.

Last summer, BYU created the “Built 4 Life” program to assist its student-athletes in helping them for life beyond college athletics while also having opportunities to monetize their own NIL.

Davis initially signed with the University of Houston out of high school before transferring to Detroit to play for his father.
