PROVO, Utah – It was only a matter of time, but the NCAA’s Transfer Portal has its first player from BYU basketball in this 2022 cycle. Walk-on guard Jeremy DowDell has entered the portal, according to VerbalCommits.com.

DowDell completed his first season with the BYU basketball program this past year. A former sharp-shooter from Olympus High School, DowDell redshirted this year in his only season at BYU.

He still has four years of eligibility remaining in his collegiate career.

Jeremy DowDell was a preferred walk-on at BYU

Coming out of Olympus High, DowDell averaged 29.6 points per game in his senior year at Olympus. He was in the same Olympus backcourt with current Utah State Aggies guard Rylan Jones. At 6-foot-2, 174-pounds, DowDell knocked down 117 three-pointers in his final season at Olympus.

DowDell signed with BYU as a preferred walk-on over a scholarship opportunity to play for Washington State.

During his one season at BYU, DowDell was sidelined in the first two months of the season due to an upper-body injury. He didn’t make any game appearances throughout the season.

Players who enter the Transfer Portal can return to the original school that they were part of if given the opportunity.

NCAA Division I Basketball limits roster sizes to 15 players. That means spots for 13 scholarship players and two walk-ons.

BYU basketball is going to be active in the Transfer Portal

BYU basketball head coach Mark Pope and his staff have been active on the recruiting and Transfer Portal trails since their season ended in the quarterfinals of the NIT last week. The Cougars, who finished 24-11 last season, have reached out to 26 players and counting in the Transfer Portal.

Pope said that he would be giving his players a break at the end of the season before conducting postseason exit interviews.
