PROVO, Utah – The Student Athlete Building is at the heart of the operation of BYU football. Every day, players and coaches roll through the “SAB” as it houses the players’ locker room, weight room, and coaches offices.

Before getting to the back of the offices, you have to go through the main lobby. The lobby is for recruits, media, and visitors checking out BYU football. It’s a way to glimpse into the program while visitors sit in the cozy couches and chairs waiting for the person with BYU football that they are scheduled to meet.

BYU football updates its office lobby

The Student Athlete Building was built nearly 20 years ago, back in 2004. It’s gone through different facelifts in the main lobby. Still, it held the same look throughout the Independence era with themes such as “Band of Brothers,” “Tradition, Spirit, Honor,” mantras synonymous with Bronco Mendenhall’s time as head coach.

Now that BYU is gearing up for life as a Power 5 football program in the Big 12 Conference in 2023, it was time for a new look. So BYU’s creative team, led by Creative Services Director Dave Broberg, put into place new designs at the football offices.

One of the designs prominently displays BYU’s new conference, the Big 12, with a caption that says, “Power 5 Football,” featuring all 12 Big 12 Conference members. Including the new additions: UCF, Cincinnati, and Houston.

The Power 5 Football wall includes images of BYU’s national branding, the 1984 national championship, and images of athletes that won national honors over the years.

Other changes in the SAB football lobby include a BYU to the NFL wall with Zach Wilson taking on the biggest presence. Wilson was selected No. 2 overall in the 2021 NFL draft by the New York Jets.

LaVell Edwards wall

A wall was dedicated to BYU’s legendary head coach LaVell Edwards with one of his quotes on handling adversity.

“How do we handle adversity? Adversity is going to be with us in everything that we do, almost in every facet of our lives – in our personal associations, in the mission field, in our chosen professions, in our families. When we have adversity we oftentimes tend to look around and think that we’re the Long Ranger.

“We tend to believe that we’re then only one who has problems. And we always look around and see others who are more talented, taller, smarter, handsome, or faster. I can assure you, … everyone has problems – even football coaches. The ability we have to handle this adversity will determine the degree of success that we will have in life. To me this is where the gospel can be the greatest of help to us.

“The power of the Holy Ghost is the greatest source of strength and comfort we can have in our lives. The Holy Ghost will not only help us in times of need, but will help us to gain a firm testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ, thereby preparing us for life.”

BYU football opens up the 2022 season on Saturday, September 3 in Tampa, Florida, when they take on the USF Bulls from the American Athletic Conference. The Cougars will officially become members of the Big 12 Conference on July 1, 2023.
