PROVO, Utah – Former BYU football tight end Bentley Hanshaw has found a new home in the NCAA’s Transfer Portal.

The three-year lettermen at BYU announced on Friday that he would continue his football career with the Liberty Flames. Like BYU, Liberty is also a faith-based FBS Independent program.

BYU will see Hanshaw and his Liberty Flames squad during the 2022 football season. The two Independent teams are scheduled to meet on October 22, 2022, in Lynchburg, Virginia. It will mark BYU’s first trip to Liberty.

The two schools previously met in 2019. A game that BYU won 31-24 in Provo.

Hanshaw’s former BYU tight end teammates shared congratulatory messages on Instagram for his new landing spot. BYU tight end Isaac Rex wrote on his IG Stories, “Bouta go crazy!!”

Hanshaw announced his decision to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal on December 6. He’s the first former BYU player in this 2022 cycle to find a new landing spot out of the portal. Quarterback Baylor Romney, who quarterbacked the Cougars in their 2019 win over Liberty, is one of the notable names from BYU in the portal along with wide receiver Chris Jackson.

Hanshaw will have three years to play three at Liberty. At 6-foot-5, 245-pounds, Hanshaw is a legacy prospect.

Hanshaw’s father, Tim Hanshaw, played offensive line for BYU from 1988, 1991-1994. The elder Hanshaw went on to play in the NFL for the San Francisco 49ers from 1995-1998.

Bentley Hanshaw appeared in one game during his BYU career (2020, LA Tech).

Hanshaw was in a busy, tight end room that features third-year player Isaac Rex, sophomore Dallin Holker, and fullback/wing tight end Masen Wake. Behind those guys is Carter Wheat and Lane Lunt.

Out of Moorpark, California, Hanshaw was a three-star tight end recruit in BYU’s 2017 recruiting class. Hanshaw served a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Sydney, Australia.
