PROVO, Utah – Fresh off of a contract extension to coach Kalani Sitake, BYU football fans received more good news on Friday night. BYU received a commitment from Lone Peak offensive lineman Joe Brown.

Brown, a 6-foot-4, 285-pound three-star prospect, was previously committed to the Virginia Cavaliers. However, when Bronco Mendenhall announced he was stepping down earlier this month, BYU got back in the picture for Brown.

Brown exclaimed in his social media post announcing the commitment, “I’M COMING HOME!!” He also tagged BYU offensive line coach Darrell Funk and Sitake in the post.

Brown is the younger brother to former BYU football players Terence Brown and Rhen Brown. Both of the older Browns played for Bronco Mendenhall in the early years of his time as head coach of the Cougars. The strong connection to the Brown family and his relationship with Garrett Tujague played a big part in why Joe initially committed to Virginia.

“You look good in royal blue! Excited for your future,” wrote Terence Brown to his brother on Twitter.

During his senior season, Brown saw a lot of time at left guard for Lone Peak High that saw the Knights claim the 6A State Championship. The lineman Brown lined up next to on the left side was Trevor Pay. Pay committed to BYU earlier in the day as a preferred walk-on commit.

Brown will serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints before enrolling at BYU. When he joins the BYU program, it will be the 2024 season, BYU’s second year in the Big 12 Conference.

Brown is the 17th commitment in BYU’s class of 2022. According to the industry standard 247Sports Composite rankings, he’s the third-highest rated prospect in the BYU class.

The early Signing Period for the 2022 class begins on Wednesday and runs through Friday, December 17.
