Tyler Allgeier Continues To Climb BYU’s All-Time Rushing Ranks

PROVO, Utah — BYU running back Tyler Allgeier has been arguably the team’s best player in 2021. The redshirt sophomore has built upon a breakout season in 2020 with an even more impressive season this year. As a result, his performance has him mentioned among college football’s best running backs.
Tyler Allgeier’s highly productive seasons have him continuing to rise all-time lists at BYU. He’s climbed the ranks of BYU’s great running backs and surpassed a Doak Walker Award winner in Saturday’s game against Georgia Southern.

Tyler Allgeier, a Doak Walker Award semifinalist this season, passed Luke Staley for 8th all-time in career rushing yards at BYU. Staley had 2,493 career rushing yards in three years with the Cougars.
Staley’s 2001 season stands as the greatest single-season for a BYU running back. Staley ran for 1582 yards and 24 touchdowns, helping lead the Cougars to 12-2 record. After his stellar junior season, Staley left BYU for the NFL. He was selected in the 7th round of the 2002 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions.
Allgeier is likely the top NFL Draft prospect in BYU’s 2022 draft class. There is a chance that Allgeier returns for another season, but he was honored at BYU’s Senior Day against Idaho State.

Tyler Allgeier is also tracking BYU’s single-season rushing records. Entering the game against Georgia Southern, Allgeier is within striking distance of some all-time records. He is 49 rushing attempts behind Ronney Jenkins for the single-season rushing attempts record of 252. Allgeier’s 17 rushing touchdowns trails Luke Staley’s 24 rushing touchdowns in 2001. He also sits 415 rushing yards shy of Staley’s 2001 season.
