PROVO, Utah – BYU women’s soccer proved on Saturday why they are the nation’s number one scoring offense. The Cougars rolled to a dominant 6-0 victory over New Mexico in the first round of the 2021 NCAA Tournament.

BYU Women’s Soccer scored six goals on New Mexico

BYU got the scoring started in the 36th minute of the first half on a goal by senior leader Cameron Tucker in her final game on the home turf at South Field. That was the only goal in the first 45 minutes, then in the second half BYU made sure their old Mountain West Conference rivals had no chance of pulling off an upset.

Sophomore midfielder Brecken Mozingo scored in the 53rd minute off an assist from Makaylie Moore. Two minutes later, before anyone could catch their breath BYU was on the attack again and it was Mozingo blasting another goal off a Laveni Vaka assist.

Then Jamie Shepherd and Kendell Petersen scored in the 64th and 69th minutes. BYU’s final goal was courtesy of Ellie Maughan off an assist from Kendell Petersen.

The offense will draw all the headlines for BYU, but the Cougar defense was dominant as well. New Mexico had a shot on goal in the second minute, but that would end up being the Lobos’s only attempt at a goal the entire evening.

BYU senior leader and WCC Offensive Player of the Year Mikayla Colohan had four shots on goal in 61 minutes of play in her last appearance on the pitch in Provo.

Up next in the NCAA Tournament

With the win, BYU advances to take on the Alabama Crimson Tide in Charlottesville, Virginia. Alabama took down Clemson 1-0 in their opening round match on Saturday.

BYU has faced Alabama only once all-time. The Cougars won that contest in 2019 in Tuscaloosa, 1-0 courtesy of a goal from Colohan.
