PROVO, Utah – BYU football hasn’t had any season-ending injuries during practices in fall camp, but they did have a personnel setback before a snap took place on the practice fields.

Freshman defensive back Talan Alfrey suffered a season-ending Achilles injury during a routine workout last month. Alfrey recently had surgery and shared on social media his injury status.

“Even though I am not participating in fall camp and will be out for this season I know I’ll bounce back even stronger and be ready for next season,” wrote Alfrey.

Alfrey continued, “I find comfort in the words found in Isaiah 41:10 ‘Fear thou not; for I am with the…for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee.”

Talan Alfrey is a former three-star defensive back prospect from the class of 2018. He prepped at Auburn Mountainview High School in Auburn, Washington.

Alfrey served a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to Uruguay. He didn’t enroll at BYU until this past January. During his first semester in the program, Alfrey was turning heads in spring practices and looked to be a newcomer to compete for immediate playing time at free safety.

With Alfrey now out for the season, players such as Malik Moore and walk-ons Hayden Livingston, Mitchell Price, and Ethan Slade will compete to play alongside Chaz Ah You at safety.

Second BYU football injury

Along with Alfrey, BYU football lost walk-on linebacker Tavita (Kavika) Gagnier to a season-ending Achilles injury as well. First-year BYU linebackers coach Kevin Clune pointed out Gagnier as someone who was contending to be in the second unit behind a loaded starting trio of Payton Wilgar, Keenan Pili, and Max Tooley.

BYU wrapped up day five of fall camp practices. After camp concludes, BYU opens up the 2021 season in Las Vegas against the Arizona Wildcats from the Pac-12 Conference.
