PROVO, Utah – Alex Barcello was in the zone, a record-setting zone in Thursday night’s BYU win over San Francisco.

Playing in his penultimate home game as a BYU Cougar, Barcello shot a perfect 7-of-7 from three in the 79-73 win.

The perfect shooting from three set a new single-game BYU Basketball record for most threes without a miss. Passing former All-American Nate Call and Brock Zylstra.

Both Call and Zylstra were 6-of-6 in their perfect shooting nights. Call’s was against Utah in an overtime loss in 1991 and Zylstra, like Barcello, had his perfect night against the San Francisco Dons in 2012.

“I didn’t really know I was having a perfect shooting night,” said Barcello. “But the one where I think, Caleb [Lohner] grabbed an amazing rebound -just a man-sized rebound- and then he found me and kicked it out. I kind of just held my follow through there, and just kind of looked at the hoop. That was kind of got the feeling that I banged quite a bit.”

What’s interesting about Barcello’s record-setting night is that he had a heave at the end of the first half that didn’t go against his perfect night. Because it was outside the normal shooting range and the shot was hurried.

According to BYU head coach Mark Pope, Barcello was dialed in during BYU’s morning shootaround. The second-year head coach said Barcello didn’t miss a shot in practice. That success carried over into the memorable performance against USF.

“He was just shooting it higher and higher and higher so it would take longer to get to the rim, so all the fans could take it in. It was amazing,” exclaimed Pope. “I don’t know what to do with this kid. I’m so grateful I don’t have to play against this kid. Like, I’m so grateful I don’t have to play against him. Because, I’m not sure what to do. He’s tough as nails, he gets wherever he wants on the floor, he’s so physical, he’s a dilligent defender, he’s an unbelievable leader, and he’s going 7-for-7 from the three-point line … man, it’s super fun.”

Barcello will look to continue his hot shooting on Saturday in his BYU home finale on Senior Night against the Saint Mary’s Gaels. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m.
