ALPINE, Utah – When John Henry Daley received a scholarship offer from BYU football in the spring of 2019, the Lone Peak star called it an offer from his “dream school.”

Nearly two years later, Daley, one of the state’s top recruits in the class of 2021 fulfilled his dream turning that offer into a commitment to the Cougars.

Daley announced his commitment to BYU on his personal social media. He’s expected to sign with BYU during the Early Signing Period that begins on Wednesday.

One of the nation’s most productive edge rushers

During his senior year with the Knights, the talented 6-foot-4, 225-pound edge rusher racked up 22 sacks, good for eighth-most by all high school football players in the nation.

Daley helped lead Lone Peak to a 12-2 record this past season and a runner-up finish to undefeated Corner Canyon. The Knights only had five games this season where opponents scored more than eight points.

Like many players who commit to the Cougars, Daley has strong connections to the BYU football program. His father, Neal, played linebacker at BYU from 1993-1995 and was a teammate with Kalani Sitake for one year in 1994. Daley’s uncle, David Nixon, was a star linebacker for the Cougars who went on to have a career in the NFL with the Raiders in the late 2000s.

Two years ago, Daley’s older brother, Michael, another elite pass rusher at Lone Peak signed with BYU. Michael is expected to be part of the BYU football program for the 2021 season after completing his mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The younger Daley will take a similar path before enrolling at BYU. John Henry Daley plans to serve a mission for the Church before beginning his BYU career in 2023.

Along with BYU, Daley received offers from Stanford, Washington State, San Diego State, UNLV, and Colorado State.

BYU now has 16 commitments in the class of 2021 heading into the Early Signing Period with Daley being the second highest rated player according to the 247Sports Composite behind only Timpview’s Logan Fano.
