SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The return of Jimmer Fredette to China is underway as the Shanghai Sharks have started their 2020-21 season. Fredette, who is probably better known in China as “Jimo Dashen” (Lonely Master), helped lead the Sharks to their first win of the year on Tuesday.

Jimmer Fredette scores 26 points in Sharks first win

The former BYU star, who is now in his 10th year as a professional player, scored 26 points for the Sharks as they defeated Shanxi, 95-88. Shanghai is now 1-1 on the season after dropping the season-opener against the Zhejiang Lions.

Fredette was 8-for-16 from the field, including 1-for-4 from three-point range. He buried a deep three in the fourth quarter to give the Sharks a four-point lead over Shanxi. Most of Fredette’s damage was done from the free-throw line, where he was a perfect 9-for-9 from the charity stripe.

Through two games, Fredette is averaging 20 points per game this season, a far modest number compared to the 37 per game he was averaging during his first stint with the Sharks from 2016-19.

Last season, Fredette played in the EuroLeague with Panathinaikos. During his one season with the “Greens,” Fredette averaged 12.9 points and hit 41 percent of his threes in EuroLeague action that was cut short due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

The Sharks return to action on Thursday at 5:35 a.m. (MT) to face the Sichuan Blue Whales.

Updates on other former BYU players in Pro Hoops

Fredette isn’t the only former BYU basketball star who’s playing ball overseas right now. Jimmer’s old running mate at BYU, Brandon Davies, led FC Barcelona in scoring with 15 points in their 87-60 win over San Sebastian Gipuzkoa.

Eric Mika scored 19 points in Partizan’s win over Bahcesehir Koleji Istanbul in EuroCup action on Tuesday. Two of Mika’s 19 points came from a highlight dunk.

Zac Seljaas scored 16 points, pulled down three rebounds, and dished out one assist in his debut performance with BC Prievidza in Slovakia.
