SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Sporting events at Granger and Olympus High will continue with limitations amid a two-week dismissal at both schools.

On Wednesday, September 23, the Granite School District announced that Granger and Olympus each have 15 confirmed cases of the coronavirus disease, COVID-19. With recommendations from the Salt Lake County Health Department it was determined that a two-week dismissal at both high schools was necessary.

The dismissal will begin on Thursday, September 24 and end on Thursday, October 8. In-person education will stop at both schools and distance learning will take place for the two week period.

Amid the stoppage of in-person education, sporting events for the Lancers and Titans will be allowed to continue with restrictions, including the limitation of spectators at games.

“Despite the dismissal, extracurricular activities and sporting events will be able to proceed with limitations on spectators,” the school district said in a statement. “No sports teams at either school currently has three or more cases of COVID-19, and the Salt Lake County Health Department does not recommend that these activities be dismissed. This is consistent with provisions in the State Health Department COVID-19 School Manual. However, if any team has case counts that rise to three or more, it is anticipated that the Health Department will recommend a 14-day dismissal of that team.”

The District also said that the high schools will be closed for the two days for deep cleaning before teachers can return to work from their classrooms.

Earlier in the week, the Salt Lake County game between Brighton and Skyline was canceled after a COVID-19 outbreak within the Eagles’ program.

In Utah County, upcoming high school football games in Orem and Provo will be played without any spectators following the Utah Department of Health’s announcement that the pair of Utah County cities are moving from to a restriction level of “Orange” amid the coronavirus pandemic.
