PROVO, Utah – BYU football is not slowing down in trying to piece together a full 12-game schedule for the 2020 season. The Cougars added another game on Monday in adding the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs from Conference-USA.

The game is on the schedule for Friday, October 2nd, at LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo. A traditional spot for BYU to play games as it leads into the weekend of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints General Conference the following two days.

“We are fortunate that LA Tech had an open date on its schedule which provided an opportunity for them to travel to Provo,” said BYU director of athletics Tom Holmoe. “We look forward to the matchup with the Bulldogs who are coming off a 10-win season.”

Louisiana Tech added to BYU schedule

This matchup in 2020 will mark the first time the two programs have ever faced off against one another on the gridiron. That has been a theme for BYU’s schedule this season. Out of the nine opponents on the Cougars schedule, seven are first-time foes.

BYU and Louisiana Tech had a scheduling agreement in 2011 and were supposed to travel to Ruston when the Bulldogs were in the WAC. That game never came to fruition as BYU ended up playing TCU in Jerry’s World instead.

The 2020 contract came together after La Tech’s season opener at Baylor was postponed due to a COVID-19 outbreak on the Bulldogs roster during Hurricane Laura.

Adding BYU brings La Tech’s total number of games in 2020 to 11. BYU is now three more games away from a full 12-game schedule if they can reschedule the postponed matchup with Army West Point.

BYU athletic director Tom Holmoe wrote earlier this month that the Cougars could continue to add games throughout the 2020 season. With three more openings and teams bound to have more postponements amid the pandemic, BYU could benefit from some quality matchups.

At one point during the summer, BYU was down to two games. Slowly, the Cougars have built up a schedule. This revamped schedule with games added on the fly isn’t as challenging on paper as the original slate that featured six Power 5’s. But the work Holmoe and ESPN have done to add games has been impressive to this point.
