PROVO, Utah – Lost in all the excitement that BYU has finally arrived at game week is the fact that the Cougars schedule for 2020 has yet to be finalized. After losing 10 of its original 12 games due to COVID-19-related scheduling decisions by other leagues, BYU is back up to eight games this fall.

Last week when BYU announced games against Texas State and UTSA, the Cougars press release read, “Kickoff times and broadcast plans will be announced at a later date, as will additional games as they are finalized.”

Additional games, you say? I laid out the remaining options to pick up on the schedule last week. But with the season upon us, what’s the holdup to add more games?

Tom Holmoe weighs in on filling out rest of BYU football schedule

If there’s anything we’ve learned from 2020, it’s expected historic and unprecedented circumstances. Imagine a scenario where BYU is adding games during the season. It’s possible according to BYU athletic director Tom Holmoe.

Holmoe was asked about that unprecedented scenario on Twitter to which the 16-year AD replied, “Could add games as season [sic] progresses. Some of the conferences have left dates open at end of the season in order or the possibility of make up [sic] games from those postponed. Some teams MIGHT chose [sic] to play a non-conference game with us that their opponent chooses not to make up.”

Hey, Big Ten teams, you want to start your season after Thanksgiving? There’s a team west of Texas that is willing to line up between the lines if you decide to play at all this season.

All of this comes amid the COVID-19 pandemic where everyone that’s playing this fall in college football is trying to navigate and figure this thing out on the fly. If an outbreak happens with a team, a game might need to be canceled or rescheduled.

The first two months of BYU’s 2020 schedule is in place. After the Cougars Halloween night tilt against Western Kentucky, BYU has a pair of open dates until a November 21st matchup with North Alabama in Provo.
