PROVO, Utah – The status of college football being played in 2020 is hanging by a thread. BYU has been one of the hardest-hit programs by leagues going to Conference-Only or postponing the season altogether.

From BYU’s original 12 game schedule, only two of those games remain. The Cougars added a Labor Day night showdown against the Navy Midshipmen last week. But now that the Mountain West Conference has decided to postpone fall sports, BYU is down to three total games for 2020.

BYU athletic director Tom Holmoe has made it clear that the Cougars want to play and they are ready to adhere to testing protocols to make a season amid a pandemic happen. Something the college football world hasn’t had to deal with since the Spanish Flu in 1918. Four years before BYU began playing football.

But it could all be over very soon depending on some upcoming decisions from Power 5 leagues.

Reports have surfaced that the Big Ten Conference is going to postpone the season to spring. The same goes for the Pac-12 Conference. Tuesday is expected to be an important day that will potentially tell us the future plans for the upcoming season.

Tom Holmoe issues message to Season Ticket holders

Holmoe sent out messages to BYU season ticket holders on Monday night amid all the uncertainty surrounding the upcoming season.

Holmoe statement to BYU season ticket holders

“The news of the last couple of days has left uncertainty as to whether or not there will be a college football season. It has been our desire all along to play football, but the impending decisions made nationally and locally in the coming days will determine whether or not we play this fall.

“We appreciate your patience and loyal support as season ticket holders during these unprecedented times. We will continue to communicate with you as important decisions are made regarding the 2020 season.”

You have to go back to 1945 to find the last time an entire BYU football season was canceled. That cancelation was due to World War II.

On Monday, hours before the MWC postponed their season, BYU head coach Kalani Sitake was asked about how his team is approaching all the uncertainty surrounding the season, “We’re going to go until they tell us to stop and our mindset is to just get better every day.”
