SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The NCAA Division I Council approved a plan for summer athletics activities for both men’s and women’s college basketball programs across the country.

The plan was approved on Wednesday, June 17.

“The Council worked to balance the desire to get student-athletes training again with the need to repopulate our campuses and athletics facilities gradually and safely, within all campus, local and state mandates,” said Council chair M. Grace Calhoun, athletics director at Penn. “Student-athlete health and safety should remain a top priority.”

According to the approved plan, the current rule which allows voluntary athletic activities for up to eight hours of virtual nonphysical activities was extended through July 19.

Starting on July 20, summer athletics activities that are required “may begin and can last up to eight weeks or until the school’s first day of classes or Sept. 15, whichever is earlier.” Virtual nonphysical activities can continue during this time.

The plan states that virtual and in-person activities cannot exceed a combined eight hours per week.

The NCAA Division I Council plans to meet again in the coming weeks to vote on recruiting calendars.

In March, the NCAA men’s and women’s championship tournaments were canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
