PROVO, Utah – BYU women’s basketball guard Shaylee Gonzales announced that she’s “super excited to get back on the court” after reaching the nine-month post-operation milestone from ACL surgery.

Gonzales made the announcement via a video posted from the official BYU women’s basketball Twitter account with a caption saying “She’s baaaacccckkkkk!!”

“Hey Cougs! It’s Shaylee Gonzales and I just wanted to make a quick announcement. I hit my nine-month post-op mark for my ACL surgery today and it has been the longest and hardest months of my life,” said Gonzales. “I just wanted to let you guys know that I’m super excited to get back on the court with my teammates. Back in practices and back to the grind. Make sure to stay tuned for this next season and go Cougs.”

Following an impressive freshman season in 2018-19, Gonzales tore her ACL prior to the start of last season. She announced the injury via an Instagram post on July 18, 2019.

“Never in a million years would I think that I’d be posting something like this. Today I will be going into surgery because I tore more ACL & lateral meniscus during practice this last Monday,” posted Gonzales. “I know that God has a plan for each and every one of us, even if it goes in the opposite direction we want it to. This will be one of the hardest things I go through, not playing the sport I love this next season but I am very motivated to get back on the court and come back even better. Thank you for all your support. #comebackszn”

She missed the entirety of the 2019-20 season as a medical redshirt. BYU posted an 18-11 record with Gonzales.

As a freshman a season ago, she led the Cougars to a 26-7 record. Gonzales helped BYU win the West Coast Conference and earn an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. The Cougars defeated the Auburn Tigers in their first game before falling to the Stanford Cardinal in the Round of 32.

Gonzales finished her freshman campaign averaging 17.0 points, 5.6 rebounds, 4.1 assists, and 1.9 steals per contest.

Following the 2018-19 season and prior to her injury, Gonzales spent time with USA Basketball.
