BYU Guard Jake Toolson Named WCC Newcomer Of The Year

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Everyone is talking about the snubs that BYU had in the WCC awards. But the Cougars did come away with one trophy. Senior guard Jake Toolson was named the WCC’s Newcomer of the Year for the 2020 season.
A transfer for Utah Valley University, Toolson played his graduate season for the school that he originally played for out of high school and he helped lead BYU to a No. 15 ranking in the AP Top 25 and a second-place finish in the WCC regular season.

This season Toolson has been one of the nation’s best pure shooters averaging 15.3 points on 47.3 percent shooting from the field and 47.1 percent from three-point range.
BYU is the nation’s top three-point shooting team this year in large part because of Toolson who has knocked down 82 of his 174 three-point attempts.
After transferring out of UVU where he was WAC Player of the Year last season, Toolson turned down offers from Duke and defending National Champion Virginia to continue his career with head coach Mark Pope who he played for at Utah Valley. Now Toolson is playing some of the best basketball of his career as BYU gears up for the West Coast Conference Tournament in Las Vegas next week.
Jake Toolson, Childs, & Haws named to All-WCC First Team
Newcomer of the Year wasn’t the only honor that Toolson received on Tuesday. Toolson and his BYU teammates Yoeli Childs and TJ Haws were named to the league’s 10-man All-WCC First Team.

The WCC’s top three teams in BYU, Gonzaga, and Saint Mary’s accounted for eight of the 10 players on the First Team selection.
