BYU Defeats San Diego On Alley-Oop From Haws To Childs

SAN DIEGO, California – When did BYU become lob city? With 25 seconds remaining, BYU was down 71-70 on the road at San Diego. With the game on the line, senior guard TJ Haws tossed an alley-oop to Yoeli Childs and the senior forward slammed it home to give BYU a 72-71 victory.

It was a survive and advance moment for a BYU team that desperately needed that win to avoid a loss to a team that had only won nine games entering Saturday.
After the Childs slam dunk, BYU still needed a stop on the defensive end to come away with the victory. San Diego forward Braun Hartfield attempted a shot in the corner with two BYU defenders on him and it clanked off the rim to give the Cougars the win.

“Coach Pope drew up an amazing play and that’s exactly how he drew it up,” said Childs on the BYU Sports Network postgame show heard on KSL NewsRadio. “We knew they were hard showing and the slip would be there. Tj makes an unbelievable pass and I’ve got a 7’6″ wingspan I might as well catch the ball. I didn’t really do anything there. TJ with an amazing pass and a great call by coach.”
BYU is now 21-7 on the season and in sole possession of second place in the West Coast Conference standings with a 10-3 league record.
