Urban Meyer Would Be ‘Nuclear Bomb’ As Dallas Cowboys Head Coach

ARLINGTON, Texas – Drama is never in short supply when it comes to the Dallas Cowboys. The team is seemingly always either considered a playoff contender or owner Jerry Jones is on the verge of firing their current head coach. There is no middle ground with Jones and the Cowboys.

That next big name on Jones’ radar could be former University of Utah head coach Urban Meyer. Meyer has been out of coaching for a year after retiring from Ohio State, citing health reasons.

However, the rumor mill keeps churning after the Cowboys lost to the New England Patriots this past week and are just 6-5 on the year.

Meyer is now considered the betting favorite to take over the Cowboys job if current head coach Jason Garret is relieved of his duties. There are legs to this possibility. Meyer is interested in the gig and said so Fox Sports Radio back in October where he said he would take the call if the Jones and the Cowboys called.

“That’s the one. Great city. They got Dak Prescott, Zeke Elliott. You got a loaded team. And I can’t speak for him (Oklahoma head coach Lincoln Riley) obviously, I hate to even speculate because I don’t know him, that’s really not fair, but to me, that’s the one job in professional football that you say, ‘I got to go do that,” Meyer said. “Absolutely. Absolutely. That one? Yes”

Of course, Meyer would listen but would he take the job? He retired for the second time due to health reasons and if he thinks Ohio State or Florida are pressure cookers then he might want to think twice about joining the Dallas Cowboys which is not only dubbed as America’s Team but also has an owner in Jones who is extremely hands-on.

Would Meyer Make A Good NFL Coach?

Meyer has been an innovator on offense going back to his days at Bowling Green and then took that to Utah where he helped bust the BCS and then win national titles at Florida and Ohio State.

His spread attack offense is very different compared to what the NFL traditionally runs. That type of offense is slowly creeping into the league but if Meyer were to join the Cowboys, his offense would be what he ran at college with it being more wide open with a lot of passing and spread elements.

The big question is if it would work, but would anyone really want to bet against Meyer being successful?

KSL Sport’s Scott Mitchell knows a thing or two about the NFL having been a 12-year veteran, and he thinks Meyer to the Cowboys would be a glorious mess.

“That would be lightning in a bottle and a nuclear bomb going off. One of the marquee franchises and Urban Meyer – I don’t know if he is good or not but that place would go nuclear,” Mitchell said. “I don’t think Urban Meyer translates to the NFL and I don’t think his style does. I would love to see what he can do and love to see that train wreck.”

“When you go into a season and you are the Dallas Cowboys and every year there is the expectations they will go to the playoffs, even if they are not any good. The Jason Garrett era has not been kind to the playoffs for the Cowboys. There is a time when the owner has had enough, and what he is really trying to say is, ‘we screwed up.'”

Meyer has been a winner at every job he has had and while the NFL is different he would have the confidence and ego to walk into that Dallas Cowboys locker room and believe he could produce a Super Bowl team in just a few short years.
