PROVO, Utah – After BYU crushed Idaho State to the tune of a 42-10 win on Senior Day, Cougar football players started sporting shirts that read, #ExtendKalani.

While players were gathering on the field wearing shirts that supported their head coach. BYU athletic director Tom Holmoe and ESPN’s Pete Derzis announced BYU’s invitation and acceptance to the 2019 Hawaii Bowl.

Once the announcement of BYU’s postseason plans concluded, Holmoe went up to one of the BYU players on the field who was sporting the grassroots t-shirt and asked if he could get the t-shirt from him. Holmoe stuffed the shirt in his jacket and proceeded to go into the locker room. Minutes later, BYU players and coaches cleared the field and entered the locker room as well.

Holmoe standing next to Sitake in the team locker room revealed the “Extend Kalani” t-shirt under his jacket and expressed to the BYU football players and coaches that Sitake was their head coach going forward.

This is a big moment for Sitake and the BYU football program to receive support from the leader of BYU’s athletic department. No official contract extension between BYU and Sitake has been announced by the University at the time this story was published. But all indications point to the extension being announced in the near future.

Through 49 games as head coach, Sitake has posted a 26-23 record and led BYU to three postseason appearances in his first four seasons.

BYU started the 2019 season with a 2-4 record and has now reeled off four consecutive victories for the first time since Sitake’s first year in 2016.

Back in January, Holmoe was asked about Sitake’s contract situation in his annual Q&A with the local media to which he replied, “He (Sitake) knows where I stand and I know where he stands, it’s (contract extension) not an issue.”

Now everyone knows where the two stands and it’s clear that BYU has their head man for the foreseeable future.
