PROVO, Utah – Just one year ago, Baylor Romney was a scout team quarterback. Now he’s quarterback number one for the second time in three games for the BYU football team.
Romney was named the starting quarterback for the Cougars in their game against fellow FBS Independent Liberty on Saturday night in Provo. A redshirt freshman from El Paso, Texas, Romney was battling a foot injury that he was playing through the past few weeks.

Three weeks ago, Romney started in BYU’s last home game against Boise State. The Cougars won that game against the nationally-ranked Broncos, 28-25. Two weeks later, injured Jaren Hall returned to the starting quarterback role after clearing concussion protocol leading up to the Utah State game.
Hall suffered a second concussion in the first half against the Aggies and Romney was inserted into the game for the second half. Romney led BYU to three straight scoring drives to seal a 42-14 victory and give BYU their first win over Utah State since 2015.
Romney has passed for 485 yards in three-game appearances this season and he’s thrown four touchdown passes to only one interception.
Zach Wilson warmed up in pregame
Sophomore quarterback Zach Wilson who started the first five games of the 2019 season for BYU was seen warming up in the pregame on Saturday night. Wilson is recovering from a thumb injury he suffered back on September 28th against the Toledo Rockets.

Wilson had surgery on his thumb a week after suffering the injury. The Liberty game was always viewed as the earliest return date for Wilson, but he’s still at least one more week away from returning to action for BYU.
