Quarterback Injuries Continue To Be Trend In BYU/USU Series

LOGAN, Utah – The 2019 edition of “The Battle of the Old Wagon Wheel” between BYU and Utah State continued a decade long theme of games riddled with quarterback injuries.
BYU experienced the QB injury in this year’s game on Saturday, November 2.
The Cougars already missing their starting quarterback Zach Wilson, turned to Jaren Hall who started against the Aggies after missing BYU’s last game due to a concussion.
Hall suffered a concussion against South Florida on October 12.
However, Hall wouldn’t find the rivalry game up in Logan. Near the end of the first half, Hall ran in a seven-yard touchdown but experience a helmet-to-helmet hit from a Utah State defender. Hall bounced up from the hit and went to the sideline.

The Cougars received the ball to open the second half but Hall wasn’t on the field at QB. Third-string quarterback Baylor Romney, who started BYU’s last game, entered the game in place of Hall and played the majority of the second half.
Later it was announced that Hall suffered a concussion in the first half and wouldn’t be available for the remainder of the game.

Romney led the Cougs to three scoring drives and a 42-14 lead. Once BYU’s eventually victory was in hand, the Cougars inserted backup QB Joe Critchlow into the game until the team’s final offensive possession.
History of Wagon Wheel Injuries
Both Utah State and BYU have experienced injuries at QB in the last decade. The injury bug seems to bite one team before or during each showdown between the Cougars and Aggies. Here are some of the quarterbacks that have been ruled out during “The Battle for the Old Wagon Wheel.”
