Oldroyd Replaced With Skyler Southam At Kicker For BYU PAT Attempt

TOLEDO, Ohio – BYU’s coaching staff has always preached that every snap is a competition for playing time. That showed itself on Saturday as BYU made a change at kicker.

Jake Oldroyd who has been automatic for the Cougars this season as the placekicker. Last week, Oldroyd made a 54-yard field goal against the Washington Huskies. But in the what have you done for me lately world of college football, you have to keep producing.

Oldroyd missed his first two field-goal attempts on Saturday against the Toledo Rockets. Because of those misses, special teams coordinator Ed Lamb turned to BYU’s backup placekicker in Skyler Southam to handle the Cougars PAT attempt in the third quarter.

BYU opened the second half with a 75-yard touchdown catch from Zach Wilson to Aleva Hifo that put BYU out in front 13-3 with the PAT pending. Southam, who was the Cougars starting placekicker last season, was inserted into the game to handle PAT for the first time this season.

Southam, a former U.S. Army All-American out of Wasatch High School in Heber City, made the PAT. To this point of the season, Southam had primarily been handling only kickoffs in the special teams for BYU. Last week, he was named Special Teams player of the week for his kickoffs.

BYU currently leads Toledo 14-6 in the third quarter from the Glass Bowl in Ohio.
