No. 16 BYU Gymnastics Defeats Utah State In Provo

PROVO, Utah – The BYU gymnastics team defeated the Utah State Aggies 196.450-194.850 in front of a record-breaking matinee crowd at the Marriott Center.

Shannon Evans tied her career-high all-around score to lead the Cougars with 39.425. Two BYU gymnasts recorded 9.900 scores with Evans on both bars and floor and Briana Pearson on floor.

“It helps to be at home and have thousands of screaming kids cheering us on. It’s awesome,” BYU head coach Guard Young said. “I’m really proud of how the girls handled it; it’s hard to train for that. It was a lot of fun. I believe that good energy makes for good gymnastics and we had that today.” 

A total of 5,285 fans filled the Marriott Center, including elementary school students from across the valley, attended the annual Kid’s Meet.

BYU start the match-up with Utah State on the vault. Evans and Rebekah Bean led the team with matching scores of 9.800. Abbey Miner and Avery Bennett were just short of that score as they posted a 9.775 and 9.750 respectively. The vault rotation ended with a tie with Utah State, 48.850.

On the second rotation, BYU had a 49.000 score on uneven bars. Evans came away with the high score of 9.900. Abby Boden was impressive as she recorded a score of 9.800, first-time performer Gabrielle Hubbard added a socre of 9.775 to help the Cougars lead 97.850-97.475, heading into the third rotation.

The meet went to the beam, where Natasha Marsh had a 9.900 score, matching her career-high. Freshman Helody Cyrenne tied her career-high as well with a score of 9.850.

BYU posted its highest score of the meet with a 49.325 on floor in the final rotation.

The Cougars will face Cal and Arizona State on Saturday, February 2 at 7 p.m. at Haas Pavilion.
