Jordan Love Rising Up Draft Boards After Great NFL Combine Performance

Feb 28, 2020, 4:14 PM | Updated: 4:58 pm

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Former Utah State quarterback Jordan Love made himself some money after an outstanding performance during the 2020 NFL Scouting Combine.

The drills were not the talk of the performance from Love in the Combine, it was more the spectacular throws that he made to wide receivers.

His scores in the drills were still impressive but his throwing power and accuracy were on display in front of NFL scouts from all 32 teams.

The NFL hands out prospect grades to each participant in the Combine that is based off of everything they do. The grading scale is from 5.0 to 8.0. An 8.0 grade is considered a perfect prospect. Love was given a 6.33 grade which is just below a “boom or bust prospect” grade and above “will be starter within first two seasons.”

NFL Draft Analyst Lance Zierlein is comparing Love to Blake Bortles.

The hype has been building around Love with great times in the drills at the Combine. A lot of NFL Draft analysts have been very high on the former Aggie and believes he is a first round draft pick.

His measurements that were made before the on-field workouts included the following:

  • 6-3 6/8 (third tallest)
  • 224 lbs. (third most)
  • 10 4/8″ hand size (largest)
  • 80″ wingspan (longest)

Joe Burrow from LSU and Tua Tagovailoa from Alabama did not do any of the workouts in the Combine.

40-yard Dash

Out of all of the quarterbacks in the NFL Combine, Love ran a 4.74 40-yard dash which is the seventh best in the 2020 Combine. Cole McDonald from Hawaii ran the fastest 40 at 4.58. Oklahoma QB Jalen Hurts was second at 4.59, Justin Herbert from Oregon was third with 4.68, Colorado’s Steven Montez was fourth at 4.68.

Ahead of Love on the list was Missouri quarterback Kelly Bryant with a 4.69 40-yard dash along with Michigan QB Shea Patterson at 4.71.

Love had a better 40-yard dash time than some notable quarterbacks in the NFL Draft including Jacob Eason from Washington and Jake Fromm from Georgia.

Love had a tremendous vertical jump score that was ranked among the tops in the quarterback group. Love jumped 35.5 inches, which is good for second in the Combine. Only McDonald (36 inches) had a higher vertical and Herbert had the same score as Love.

Steven Montez (117 inches), Shea Patterson (116 inches), Morgan James from Florida International (112 inches), Jake Fromm (111 inches), Jacob Eason (110 inches) and Nate Stanley from Iowa (108 inches) finished below Love on the quarterback list for the broad jump in the Combine.

The former Utah State quarterback finished in the middle of the pack in the three-cone drill when he finished the drill in 7.21. That score was good for sixth out of the 12 quarterbacks to participate in the drill.

Former Oregon QB Justin Herbert had the fastest time at 7.06, Princeton QB Kevin Davidson was second at 7.13 followed by McDonald (7.13), Michigan State quarterback Briant Lewerke (7.14) and Patterson (7.14) had better scores.

In the 20-yard shuffle, Love did the drill in 4.52 seconds. That time is towards the bottom of the list among the quarterbacks at No. 9 out of 12 QB’s. Davidson had the fastest time of 4.37, followed by Lewerke (4.40), Montez (4.43), Herbert (4.46), Stanley (4.48), Patterson (4.50), Bryant (4.51) and Fromm (4.51) had faster times than Love.
