SALT LAKE CITY – Following a 13-7 loss to the TCU Horned Frogs, Kyle Whittingham’s staff will undergo a significant change as offensive coordinator Andy Ludwig has stepped down from his position.
Ludwig stepped down after the third consecutive loss for the Utes. The Utes offensive struggles have mounted and progress has been minimal. It all culminated in Saturday night’s abysmal offensive performance against the Horned Frogs.
Kyle Whittingham issued a statement regarding his former offensive coordinator
“Assistant coach Andy Ludwig has made the decision to step down from his position with Utah Football. Andy is the consummate professional and we want to thank him for his complete dedication to our program during his 10 total seasons with us. Coach Ludwig has been instrumental to our success here at Utah and personally, I have a tremendous amount of respect and admiration for Andy as both a coach and a person. We wish him nothing but the best in all of his future endeavors.”
The Utes have averaged just 24.0 points per game this season and only 14.0 points per game in the last three games. The struggles are much deeper than that as the offense has looked inept for large portions of the season.
What happens next with the offensive coordinator role?
With Ludwig’s departure, the early indications point to analyst Mike Bajakian being elevated to play caller. Offensive line coach Jim Harding has served as run game coordinator with Ludwig and will likely continue in that role. Bajakian seems set to assume pass-game coordination and play-calling duties.
Bajakian came to Utah following a three-year stint as Northwestern’s offensive coordinator. He also coordinated at Boston College and Tennessee. He also has spent time in the NFL with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Chicago Bears.
