SALT LAKE CITY – Utah native Tony Finau and the United States team captured the President’s Cup championship by defeating the International team.

The President’s Cup took place at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina from September 22-25.

On Sunday, Finau and the U.S. won the tournament by a final score of 17 1/2 to 12 1/2.

It was the United States’ ninth straight victory over the International team, who has recently seen many of its players leave for LIV Golf. All 12 of the U.S. players are currently ranked in the top 25 of the world’s best golfers.

“Trevor and his team did an incredible job of rising to the occasion,” U.S. captain Davis Love III said. “We really don’t have to do much. All we have to do is not mess it up.”

Finau won his Sunday Singles matchup with Taylor Pendrith, 3 & 1.

Sunday’s victory came after Finau and Kevin Kisner fell to Sebastián Muñoz and Sungjae Im in Saturday’s Four-Balls competition. However, Finau and Max Homa did beat Si Woo Kim and Cam Davis in Saturday’s foursomes, 4 & 3.

Finau and Homa opened the event with a 1 Up win over Pendrith and Mito Pereira during Thursday’s foursomes.

“I was more nervous than I should have been because I wanted to get that monkey off my back,” Jordan Spieth of the United States said. “When you get off early on a Sunday, they’re looking for red on the board. And it feels good to provide it.”

With the win, the U.S. improved its record at the President’s Cup to 12-1-1 since 1994. Royal Melbourne handed the Americans their only loss in 1998 and South Africa posted a tie in 2003.

The next President’s Cup is with Royal Montreal in 2024.
