Tony Finau Unable To Recreate Round Two Magic On Saturday
Widely considered the toughest test in golf, shooting even par at Oakmont Country Club is a feat. Finau did that on Friday, which allowed him to make the cut, something six former U.S. Open champions couldn’t say this year.
However, his third round was more reminiscent of his first.
The front nine was rough for Finau; he carded five bogeys and four pars. He made up some ground on the 10th as he holed an improbable long putt for a birdie.

His round ultimately came to a close with one more birdie, one more bogey, and a handful of pars. At +10 overall, he sat just outside the top 50.
A recent theme for Finau continued in the wet conditions, as putting struggles plagued the Utah native. He lost more than a full stroke to the field in strokes gained putting.
With that said, the lightning-quick greens, narrow fairways, and sporadic bunkers had nearly every golfer in a chokehold. Midway through the third day, only three golfers were at even par or better overall.
