SALT LAKE CITY – It took Tony Finau until his final shot of the second round to make the cut at The Open Championship.

Despite making bogey on holes 16 and 17, Finau had to make a birdie on 18 to play on the weekend. Finau’s tee shot on 18 traveled 325 yards just short of the green, a 23-yard wedge shot left Finau with 11 feet to make the cut. He buried the putt and celebrated accordingly.

Tony Finau The Open Success

Finau is yet to miss the cut across the pond at The Open. His six previous starts at The Open have all resulted in Finau making the cut and playing the weekend. In fact, Finau has performed so well at The Open that his worst finish is a T27 that came back in 2017 at Royal Birkdale.

The second round began in a chaotic fashion after Finau birdied the opening hole before making double bogey on the par 4 2nd. On the second hole, Finau had 12 feet to save par that he missed, then missed his 3-foot attempt to save bogey and finally tapped in for double bogey from 1 foot.

But Finau was able to recover by going on a six-hole stretch that only involved pars. Then, a birdie on the par 4 9th had Finau making the turn at even par.

Finau then started to catch fire early in the second round when he made an 18-foot attempt and then stuck his approach to five feet for consecutive birdies on holes 11 and 12. He looked comfortable and in control suggesting that another made cut was imminent.

However, drama ensued on 16 and 17 when he made back-to-back bogeys and was subsequently required to birdie 18 to make the cut. Both bogeys were a result of poor shots off the tee box, Finau found trouble on both holes off the tee and ultimately cost him a shot on both holes.

Finau prevailed and kept his Open Championship streak of never missing the cut.

Finau will tee off on Saturday at 1:55 a.m. on Saturday alongside Adri Arnaus. Finau and Arnaus will be just the third group on Saturday on the golf course.
