PROVO, Utah – There might be only ten weeks until BYU football kicks off the 2022 season, but roster construction is still taking place.

The Cougars picked up another cornerback for this upcoming season in Mory Bamba from Tyler Junior College. Bamba tweeted out his commitment to BYU, “1000% All In.”

Mory Bamba’s path to BYU Football

A 6-foot-3, 190-pound cornerback originally from Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, Bamba began his college career at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh for track and field after dealing with injuries his senior year of high school. He redshirted in 2019 with the Titans.

After one year with a track team, Bamba moved to football, where he transferred to ASA College in Miami for the 2020 season. That season was delayed due to COVID-19. Bamba’s first year of college football was in the spring of 2021. A season that didn’t count against his eligibility.

He then completed the fall season with ASA College, after which he transferred to Tyler Junior College in Texas and took part in spring training.

Tyler JC has a connection to BYU in head coach Tanner Jacobson. Jacobson is a former defensive back who played for BYU’s current defensive coaches.

Opportunity for playing time in 2022

BYU cornerbacks coach Jernaro Gilford has prioritized bolstering the depth at cornerback, especially after losing Keenan Ellis, Shamon Willis, and most recently, Isaiah Herron to medical retirements. Bamba fills a need for BYU and can compete immediately this fall for playing time.

Since the calendar turned to 2022, Gilford has added Korbyn Green, Nathaniel Gillis, Chika Ebunoha, Evan Johnson, and Zion Allen from the high school ranks. He also added former Vanderbilt starter Gabe Jeudy-Lally out of the transfer portal.

Earlier this week, Bamba completed an official visit to BYU’s campus, putting BYU in the lead for the dual-sport athlete. Before his trip to BYU, he had an official visit to Utah State.

Bamba has three years of eligibility remaining in his collegiate career.

He joins a cornerback room with D’Angelo Mandell and Kaleb Hayes atop the offseason depth chart. But Gilford expressed at Media Day that competition for playing time will take place. BYU wants to have the secondary to be able to play man coverage. With his size and speed, Bamba gives BYU another option to put that type of product out on the field this fall.
