Utah Utes Ski Team Wins 15th National Championship In Program History

SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah Utes ski team has won the 2022 National Championship, their 15th title in program history on Saturday.

On Thursday, the women’s and men’s giant slalom events took place, along with the women’s 5k classical and the men’s 10k classical. The slalom events were at Park City Mountain Resort, while the men’s and women’s classicals were at Soldier Hollow. Friday was the men’s and women’s slalom runs in Park City. Saturday was the men’s 20k freestyle and women’s 15k freestyle at Soldier Hollow.

Thursday Event Scores For Utah Utes Ski Team

In the women’s giant slalom, Katie Parker had the third best time of 2:03.63 for 34 points. Kaja Norbye finished with 29 points with a time of 2:04.00, good for fifth place. Leading the way was Magdalena Luczak from Colorado with a time of 2:02.03 and 40 points. Katie Hensien of Denver finished in second with 37 points and a time of 2:03.28.

Utah was in second in team scoring with 63 points, trailing Denver with 69 points.

In the men’s giant slalom event, Utah’s Gustav Vollo ended in second with a time of 1:58.14 and 37 points, trailing Colorado’s Filip Forejtek’s time of 1:57.41 and 40 points. Utes skier Joachim Lien finished in sixth place with 27 points and a time of 1:58.61. Wilhelm Normannseth helped Utah by finishing in 20th with 11 points and a time of 2:00.00.

The Utes had 75 points in the event, leading the way over Denver’s 63 points and Colorado’s 59 points.

In the women’s 5k classic, Utes standout and Olympian Novie McCabe took the crown with a time of 13:22.8 and 40 points. Fellow Ute and Olympian Sophia Laukli tied for second with a time of 13:36.3 and 35.5 points. She tied Vermont’s Anna Bizyukova. Sydney Palmer-Leger ended her run in sixth place and 27 points with a time of 13:58.7.

Utah dominated the team standings with a score of 102.5. Colorado was in second with 67 points.

In the men’s 10k classic, Utah skier and Olympian Luke Jager had a 12th place time of 25:00.7 and 19 points. Bjorn Riksaasen was in 17th place with a time of 25:18.0 and 14 points, while teammate Samuel Hendry ended in 18th place with a time of 25:23.8 and 13 points. Ben Ogden of Vermont won the event with a time of 23:43.1 and 40 points.

Alaska Fairbanks and Denver took the event as a team with 76 points each. Colorado finished in second with 74 points, along with Vermont. The Utes were in third with 46 points.

Friday Event Results

In the men’s slalom, Vermont took first and third place with Mathias Tefre taking the event with a time of 1:53.69 and 40 points. His teammate Joachim Linstol was in third with a time of 1:54.01 and 34 points. Utes standout Gustav Vollo ended in second place with 37 points and a time of 1:53.97. His teammate Joachim Lien ended in eighth with a time of 1:54.69 and 23 points. Wilhelm Normannseth tied for 13th with a time of 1:55.77 and 17.5 points.

As a team, Vermont took the event with 89 points with Utah in second with 77.5.

In the women’s slalom, Denver’s Katie Hensien won the event with a time of 1:45.40 and 40 points. Westminster skier Evelina Fredericsson placed second with 1:45.63 and 37 points. Her teammate Denise Dingsleder was in fifth place with a time of 1:46.54 and 29 points. Utes skier Kaja Norbye recorded a sixth place finish with a time of 1:47.44 and 27 points. Teammate Sona Moravcikova ended in 22nd with a time of 1:52.35 and nine points. Also, Katie Parker was in 26th place with a time of 2:12.32 and five points.

Westminster won the event with 83 points. Denver was in second with 70. The Utes finished eighth with 41 points.

Saturday Event Results

In the men’s 20k freestyle event, Ben Ogden of Vermont took the crown with a time of 43:00.5 and 40 points. Utah’s Samuel Hendry was in second with 43.07.9 and 37 points. Bjorn Riksaasen had a 12th place finish with a time of 43.50.0 and 19 points. Luke Jager recorded a 14th place finish with a time of 44:04.1 and 17 points.

Those three skiers put the Utes in second place as a team with 73 points, behind Vermont’s 78 points.

Sealing the National Championship was clutch performances from three Utes in the women’s 15k freestyle. Sophia Laukli took first with a time of 36:35.7 and 40 points. Novie McCabe recorded a second place finish with a time of 37:09.5 and 37 points. Sydney Palmer-Leger was in eighth place with a time of 38:53.8 and 23 points.

Utah dominated the event with 100 points as a team. Alaska Fairbanks finished second with 73 points.
