BYU Football Adds Sailor Coug Logo To Helmet For Baylor Game

WACO, Texas – The equipment staff for the BYU football team always has a few tricks up their sleeve.
After Baylor announced they would be wearing a fan-favorite “Sailor Bear” helmet for this Saturday’s game, BYU had to get in on the fun.
BYU’s Director of Player Experience and Equipment Operations, Billy Nixon, revealed the “Sailor Coug” would be added to the back of the Cougars navy blue helmets against Baylor.

This is the first time BYU has ever had the “Sailor Coug” logo on its football helmet.
BYU’s Sailor Coug logo has been around the university dating back to the 1980s. However, back in 2014, BYU hired a logo design company to give the Sailor Coug an updated look and it’s the decal that will be on display this weekend on BYU’s football helmet.
Now that both teams will be sporting a sailor logo on their lids, the official BYU football Twitter account dubbed Saturday’s contest on the banks of the Brazos River “The Sailor Game.” That’s one way to start laying a foundation towards making BYU versus Baylor a rivalry when the Cougs join the Big 12 in 2023. Or it’s just another way to add some extra juice to an already intriguing matchup.

BYU has enhanced its uniform identity over the past year under the direction of Nixon and his staff. The Cougars now have 26 different uniform combinations to pick from each week. BYU plans to wear a different combination for each game in 2021.
This week’s uniform combination against Baylor includes the aforementioned navy blue helmet, white jersey, and navy blue pants.
Baylor will go with an all-green look in honor of their homecoming festivities.

No. 19 BYU versus Baylor kicks off Saturday, October 16, in Waco at 1:30 p.m. (MT). The game will be televised nationally on ESPN and heard on KSL NewsRadio, with coverage beginning at 10 a.m. live from Waco.
