How Bear, Tiger Bachmeier Could Impact BYU Football In 2025

PROVO, UtahΒ – BYU football continues to benefit from the coaching change at Stanford.

The latest example was BYU landing Stanford wide receiver transfer Tiger Bachmeier and QB Bear Bachmeier. They join Nusi Taumoepeau, another former Stanford signee, who flipped to BYU earlier in the spring.

Stanford is currently coached by interim Frank Reich, a former NFL head coach, who will be in the role for only this season. He replaced Troy Taylor, who coached the Cardinal for the past two seasons.

The Bachmeier brothers could have an impact right away at BYU in 2025.

Let’s start with wide receiver Tiger Bachmeier.

Tiger Bachmeier has an opportunity to start right away for BYU football in 2025

The former class of 2023 signee was a four-star prospect, and during his freshman season, he made an instant impact on “The Farm.” Bachmeier led all Pac-12 true freshmen in receptions (36) and receiving yards (409) in 2023.

Last season, he started six games and was a co-starter at receiver on Stanford’s depth chart. He still made his impact felt as a return specialist, where he had a 90-yard punt return for a touchdown against Cal Poly.

His impact on the gridiron sounds like the role former BYU receiver and reported Miami commit Keelan Marion occupied the past two seasons.

Tiger Bachmeier is listed at 6 feet 1 inch, 190 pounds, while Marion played at 6 feet, 195 pounds for BYU last year.

Marion’s departure after spring practices was significant for BYU. Now, BYU has another receiver with college experience who could fill that void left by Marion. Parker Kingston and Cody Hagen will be some of the top contenders to battle Bachmeier for the starting role.

Bachmeier could be used in BYU’s offense like former BYU star Puka Nacua. BYU offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick could utilize Tiger’s speed in BYU’s rushing attack, quick screens in space, and also target him downfield. That’s how Marion’s role evolved coming out of spring ball.

Bachmeier is a former track and field athlete who ran an 11.4 100-meter dash at Murrieta Valley High School. BYU can use his athleticism in creative ways.

Tiger has two years of eligibility remaining in his college career.

Bear Bachmeier adds more intrigue to the backup quarterback battle

Bear Bachmeier was a four-star quarterback prospect by the 247Sports Composite as a prep recruit in the class of 2025. He enrolled at Stanford during the winter quarter and participated during the first two weeks of spring practice for the Cardinal in a young quarterback unit before entering the NCAA Transfer Portal.

After one quarter at Stanford, Bachmeier entered the portal and landed at BYU.

BYU’s offensive staff offered him as a high school recruit in the 2025 cycle, but he went off the board early to the Cardinal.

Now he’s off to BYU and has a chance to add to the backup quarterback battle behind Jake Retzlaff this fall.

Coming out of spring practice, Roderick was clear that the backup competition would continue into fall camp. Neither McCae Hillstead nor Treyson Bourguet did enough to cement themselves as the clear-cut No. 2 this season.

Hillstead and Bourguet were in Southern California this past week, along with Retzlaff, training at 3DQB.

That leaves Bachmeier with an opportunity to push for the job. It’s a coveted spot as it lays the groundwork for what BYU does in 2026 after Jake Retzlaff’s eligibility expires this fall.

Bachmeier was a starter for three seasons at Murrieta Valley High, passing for 6,810 yards and 59 touchdowns. He’s a dual-threat prospect, the type of signal-caller Roderick’s offenses have experienced the most success with: Zach Wilson, Jaren Hall, and Retzlaff.

Bachmeier had 30 rushing touchdowns and gained 1,724 yards on the ground.

Bachmeier has solid measurables at 6 feet 2 inches and 225 pounds. As a prep star, he was a dual-sport athlete, lettering in baseball, basketball, and football.

Bachmeier is the second-highest rated QB signee BYU has landed since Aaron Roderick joined the staff in 2018. So there will be expectations for him to be a potential difference maker, so fall camp should be fascinating to see how he competes against Hillstead and Bourguet.
