Lee Cummard named BYU women’s basketball head coach
“Lee has been an important part of our BYU Athletics family for many years,” BYU athletics director Tom Holmoe said. “His time as a star player on the men’s team, and a member of both the men’s and women’s basketball coaching staffs, gives him valuable experience and connection in this important position. He has displayed a loyal commitment to BYU and understands the valuable mission of our university. He will be able to retain key players and recruit those that will fit, excel and align at BYU.”
Cummard becomes the eighth coach in BYU women’s basketball history. He replaces Amber Whiting, who was the head coach for the past three seasons.
The former BYU men’s basketball player was on Whiting’s staff as the Associate Head Coach for all three years.
Cummard has been an assistant in the BYU women’s basketball program since 2019. Before that, he was an assistant for a season in the men’s basketball program under former BYU head coach Dave Rose.
During his time under former BYU women’s basketball coach Jeff Judkins, Cummard stepped in as an interim head coach and posted a 3-0 record in 2021 after Judkins tested positive for COVID-19.
Among those three victories were a pair of wins over nationally ranked teams, Florida State and West Virginia.
Cummard takes over a BYU women’s basketball program that hasn’t had a winning season since 2021.
This past season, BYU finished with its worst record in 17 years, finishing 13-17.
Through two seasons in the Big 12 Conference, 10-26 in league play. Six of those ten victories have come against the programs that joined the Big 12 in 2023, the same year as BYU. Those programs are Cincinnati, Houston, and UCF.
BYU has notched one victory over a Top 25 opponent in each Big 12 season since joining the league.
One of Cummard’s top priorities as head coach will be to retain star guard Delaney Gibb.
Gibb was the Big 12 Freshman of the Year this past season. She’s currently one of eight players listed on BYU’s official roster for the 2025-26 season. The transfer portal for women’s basketball will remain open until May 1.
Lee Cummard was an accomplished player during his BYU basketball career. He finished with 1,569 career points, the 16th most points scored in BYU basketball history.
Cummard was the Mountain West Conference Co-Player of the Year in 2008. He helped lead BYU to three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances.
