Injury Update On BYU’s Kanon Catchings Entering NCAA Tournament

PROVO, Utah – Will BYU forward Kanon Catchings play on Thursday against VCU in the NCAA Tournament?
The heralded 6-foot-9 freshman has been out since suffering a knee injury against West Virginia on March 1. That’s caused him to miss the past four games for a BYU team that is preparing to face No. 11 seed VCU on Thursday afternoon in Denver.

BYU basketball head coach Kevin Young was asked about the potential availability of Catchings in the “Big Dance.”
Kanon Catchings remains “day to day”
“He’s still day to day. He worked out today. So we’re kind of trying to move him along,” BYU head coach Kevin Young said to reporters on Selection Sunday.
Earlier in the month, Young noted that Catchings’ injury “wasn’t as bad as it looked,” still, the sharpshooting stretch four hasn’t been suited up in any games since suffering the injury.
Catchings has been in a reserve role off the bench since January 14, when Kevin Young changed up his starting five.
If Kanon Catchings is available, it would give Young 11 players to have in his rotation entering the NCAA Tournament.
“Like any injury we have here, we try to do what’s best for the athlete,” Young added on Sunday. “We’re in constant communication with how he’s feeling with him and with our training staff. And that’s where things lie with him.”
A former four-star recruit from Overtime Elite, Catchings is averaging 7.6 points, 2.3 rebounds, and shooting 41.2% from the field this season for BYU.
Catchings had strong performances in wins over NCAA Tournament teams Arizona on February 22, where he scored 14 points, and in January, he had a perfect shooting night that led to 23 points in a victory over Baylor.
