BYU basketball is led by senior Richie Saunders entering the 2025-26 Big 12 Conference season.
PROVO, Utah – BYU basketball is preparing for a highly anticipated season in 2025-26.
The Cougars enter their third season in the Big 12 Conference and are looking to climb the league standings after finishing fourth last year.
BYU’s opponents in its pursuit of a Big 12 title were revealed on Thursday morning.
The Big 12 Conference announced the opponent matrix for men’s basketball in the 2025-26 season.
The Big 12 is entering its second year as a 16-team conference. Last year, they played a 20-game league schedule; the 2025-26 season will feature an 18-game slate.
That means a Big 12 program will face only three teams, home and away. BYU’s three home/away opponents include Arizona, Texas Tech, and rival Utah.
Big 12 Men’s Basketball Vice President Brian Thornton said at the Big 12 Spring Meetings last month that rivalries, geography, and television would be factors in deciding each program’s home and away opponents.
Home/Away
- Arizona
- Texas Tech
- Utah
Is the Big 12 looking to generate a rivalry between BYU and Arizona? For the second consecutive year, the programs within bordering states are set to square off twice in Big 12 play.
BYU and Arizona split the two meetings last year, with both claiming road victories.
The rivalry with Utah resumes in year two as Big 12 opponents. Last year, BYU was 1-1 against the Utes, losing at the Huntsman Center in January, then closing out the regular season with a rivalry win at the Marriott Center.
Former NBA assistant and Utah player Alex Jensen is entering his first year as the Utes’ head coach.
Home Only
- Arizona State
- Colorado
- Houston
- Iowa State
- TCU
- UCF
The marquee matchup will be when the defending Big 12 Champion Houston Cougars roll into Provo. Houston is 3-0 against BYU since the two programs joined the Big 12 in 2023.
The Cougars in red are viewed as a potential No. 1 team in the country this season after retaining key players from last year’s team that reached the National Championship Game.
While BYU head coach Kevin Young is looking for his first win over Houston, he will look to maintain his perfect record against Iowa State.
Last year, BYU took down the Cyclones in Hilton Coliseum in Ames and then in the Big 12 Tournament Quarterfinals.
Colorado will make its first visit to the Marriott Center as a Big 12 Conference member. The Buffs’ last visit to Provo was in 2016, when they were in the Pac-12 and BYU was in the West Coast Conference.
Away Only
- Baylor
- Cincinnati
- Kansas
- Kansas State
- Oklahoma State
- West Virginia
BYU basketball makes the two-time zone trip to face West Virginia in Morgantown for the third consecutive season. Since joining the league, BYU has won its previous two visits to Morgantown.
Another noteworthy road trip will be at Baylor. BYU landed former Baylor guard Rob Wright out of the transfer portal. His departure from Waco was a significant story, so I’m sure there will be a lot of emotions for the Baylor faithful when BYU rolls into town.
BYU will visit Allen Fieldhouse for the second time as a Big 12 member to face the Kansas Jayhawks. BYU pulled off an upset 76-68 victory over the No. 7-ranked Jayhawks two years ago.
The matchup between BYU and Kansas will pit the nation’s top two high school prospects in the 2025 cycle, BYU’s AJ Dybantsa and Kansas guard Darryn Peterson, against one another.
BYU will look for its first road wins at Cincinnati, Kansas State, and Oklahoma State.
