SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah Jazz announced that they have waived guard Jared Butler, forward Stanley Johnson, and center Cody Zeller on Saturday.

Entering training camp, the Jazz had 18 players on the roster with guaranteed contracts, including Jared Butler and Stanley Johnson. Cody Zeller was under a non-guaranteed contract. They had to trim their roster down to 15 players under guaranteed contracts before the start of the season on Tuesday.

On October 9, they waived guard Saben Lee, who was acquired in the Bojan Bogdanovic trade.

Jared Butler’s Utah Jazz Career

Butler was taken in the second round with the 40th overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft by the New Orleans Pelicans. On August 7, 2021, the Pelicans traded Butler to the Memphis Grizzlies. Later that day, the Jazz acquired Butler.

After winning a national championship at Baylor, Butler played in 42 games with one start last season. He averaged 3.8 points, 1.1 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per contest while shooting 40% from the field and 31% from downtown.

Butler appeared in three of the four preseason games. In Edmonton against the Toronto Raptors, Butler had three points, one rebound, one assist, one steal, and three turnovers in nine minutes on the floor. He shot 1-of-6 from the field.

In the preseason win over Portland, Butler finished with seven points, one rebound, and two assists on 2-for-2 shooting in six minutes. The last preseason appearance for Butler was against the Spurs, where he had 13 points, seven assists, seven rebounds, two steals, and a blocked shot in 27 minutes.

Johnson appeared in one preseason game against the Trail Blazers, recording five points, five rebounds, one assist and a blocked shot in 15 minutes.

The Jazz will begin the 2022-23 season on Wednesday, October 19 when they host the Denver Nuggets at Vivint Arena. Tip-off is at 7 p.m. on the KSL Sports Zone and AT&T SportsNet.
