SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah Jazz will be without Donovan Mitchell for the first time this season against the Atlanta Hawks due to an ankle injury.

Mitchell injured his ankle late in the second quarter in the team’s win over the Sacramento Kings but returned to the floor for a dominant second half. The guard had 15 points in the third and fourth quarter to finish the game with a season-high 36 points.

Last season, Mitchell missed the final 15 games of the regular season and the first game of the playoffs with a severe ankle sprain.

After turning the ankle against the Kings, Mitchell ran straight to the locker room before the end of the half, but after the game, assured fans it had nothing to do with the previous injury.

“I rolled my ankle, it’s not because of what happened last year although it was the same foot,” Mitchell said. “It was just in a moment where I was frustrated because I didn’t get the call. I felt like I got hit, I rolled it again — there was just so much going on. And then I was like, ‘Man, this kind of hurts,’ so I ran to the back just to make sure I was okay.”

Before tonight’s game with the Hawks, Jazz coach Quin Snyder discussed the team’s approach to Mitchell’s injury.

“We’re conservative and diligent about those types of things,” Snyder said. “In this case, as much as anything, I think Donovan is in a good place mentally, and we will make sure that he’s in a good place physically and he’ll be back.”

The Jazz will have Royce O’Neale who also suffered a rolled ankle against the Kings. The forward was cleared before the game after being listed as questionable on Wednesday.

The Jazz and Hawks will tip-off at 5:30 pm MT. The game can be heard on 97.5 and 1280 The Zone Sports Network and will be televised on AT&T Sports Net.
