SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – During the Utah Jazz live practice broadcast over Zoom, star Donovan Mitchell wore jersey number 22 to honor late University of Utah football player Aaron Lowe.

Lowe was shot and killed at a house party last week after the Utes victory over Washington State in their PAC-12 season opener.

Lowe signed with Utah in 2019 as a three-star recruit out of West Mesquite High School. He played in 11 games on special teams as a freshman. During the COVID-19 shortened season, Lowe played in all five games on special teams in 2020.

“I wanted to pay my respects,” Mitchell said after the practice. “I wore it in Vegas a couple of times.”

The Utah defensive back was the first recipient of the Ty Jordan Memorial Scholarship and switched his number from 2 to 22 during the offseason to honor the life of his childhood friend who was killed last Christmas.

The Jazz held the live Zoom broadcast to give fans a look at the team before their preseason opener.

A GoFundMe page has been set up by Lowe’s family to help them with the funeral expenses after the Utah DB was tragically killed.

Aaron Lowe’s father William Smith Jr. started the GoFundMe page on Sunday afternoon with the following message.

“My name is William Smith Jr. I’m the father of Aaron Lowe (A-Lowe). We want to give Aaron the memorial he deserves, to honor his memory and respect for his life. I’m currently asking for donations to help cover the cost of Aaron’s funeral. We need to raise as close to $15,000 as soon as possible to afford the funeral service,” the message read.

By Saturday, over $26,000 was raised by fans remembering Lowe. The GoFundMe page can be found, here.

The Jazz will open their preseason on Monday against the San Antonio Spurs and will open the regular season on October 20 at home against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
